PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Rex Ryans new-look defense is running out of rookie starters. The Bills two top draft picks are now sidelined with injuries. The team announced Wednesday that linebacker Reggie Ragland will have surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left knee. Ryan said he expects Ragland to miss the entire season.Ragland was Buffalos second-round pick out of Alabama. The Bills are already down their first-round pick, linebacker Shaq Lawson, who is expected to miss at least the first month of the season recovering from shoulder surgery in May.Well, we were excited about those two guys. Obviously, we think theyre rare talents and thats not going to change either based on an injury, Ryan said following practice. Its just unfortunate that weve got to be a little more patient than maybe we wanted to.Ragland was hurt during practice Friday. He was going after a ball carrier on a run play when he pulled up suddenly and went to the ground without being hit.Initial tests were inconclusive because of swelling around the knee. The severity of the injury was revealed after a follow-up test. The Bills thought so highly of Ragland that they considered selecting him with their first pick, 19th overall. They instead chose Lawson, a highly touted pass rusher out Clemson whose stock dropped because of concerns he might need shoulder surgery to repair an injury that nagged him in college. In the second round, the Bills traded up eight spots to select Ragland with the 41st pick. Both were immediately pegged as starters on a defense being overhauled after it underperformed during Ryans first season last year.Ragland spent the entire offseason playing one of two middle linebacker spots, alongside returning starter Preston Brown.Veteran free agent addition Zach Brown will replace Ragland. The Bills also restocked the position by signing veteran free agents Brandon Spikes and David Hawthorne on Sunday.Lawson was supposed to immediately step in to fill the outside position left open after the Bills cut Mario Williams in March. Lawsons backup, veteran Manny Lawson, is also hurt. Hes expected to miss most of the preseason with a partially torn pectoral muscle.Despite the injuries, Ryan is sticking with the offseason vow he made in saying Buffalos defense will be better from last year, when it ranked 20th in yards allowed and managed 21 sacks -- a franchise-low for a 16-game season.Ive said all along our defense will be much improved, and Ill stand by that, Ryan said. Its really unfortunate for the young man and for our team because we know hes a fine player. But guys will step up.Game notes WR Greg Salas left practice with a hamstring injury. ... CLEVELAND -- Justin Verlanders superb outing couldnt prevent the Detroit Tigers from falling further behind in the AL Central race.Verlander allowed one hit in seven innings -- Jason Kipnis leadoff single in the sixth -- but the Tigers couldnt take advantage of an injury to Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco two pitches in and lost 1-0 in 10 innings on Saturday.Detroit, which managed four hits off eight relievers, trails AL Central-leading Cleveland by eight games and remained three games back in the wild-card race. Its definitely frustrating when they had to use the bullpen since the beginning of the game and we dont score a single run, designated hitter Victor Martinez said. Its bad. Were running out of time and losing tonight definitely wont help anything.Detroit has lost 13 of 14 to the Indians and been outscored 91-40 in the season series.Obviously, this is a tough team loss, Verlander said. This late in the year, when every game is so important, it hurts. One run was all they needed in the end. There are so many variables when you lose, but you do feel the pressure at this point of the season because you know you need to win, Verlander added. Even though I feel good about the way I pitched, it stinks.Miguel Cabrera had two hits and needs one to reach 2,500. Detroit advanced just one runner to third base.Carrasco, the Indians No. 2 starting pitcher, will miss the rest of the season after breaking his right hand when hit by a line drive off the bat of Detroits Ian Kinsler in the first inning.Cleveland used a major league record nine pitchers in a shutout of nine or more innings since at least 1913.We have to find a way to score, obviously, maanager Brad Ausmus said.dddddddddddd I felt like we couldve been a little better -- not for a lack of effort -- but to me, this one is more frustrating than last night.Indians manager Terry Francona and a team trainer immediately went to the mound after Carrasco was hit. The trainer worked with Carrasco to get the feeling back in his hand for several moments before the pitcher walked off the field. Carrasco was sent for X-rays, which revealed the fracture.Jeff Manship replaced Carrasco after the infield hit.
