NEW YORK -- Ryan McDonagh scored off a rebound of Dan Girardis shot 1:56 into overtime to complete the New York Rangers surprising rally in a 4-3 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Monday night. McDonagh put the puck past backup goalie Thomas Greiss, who relieved injured starter Mike Smith in the third period and then gave up the tying and winning goals. Girardi got the Rangers even with 3:26 left in regulation when he tipped in a drive by his defence partner McDonagh. Brad Richards and Derick Brassard scored in the second period when New York erased a 2-0 deficit Phoenix built in the first. Henrik Lundqvist made 18 saves to win on a night he was honoured for recently breaking Rangers marks for career victories and shutouts. The Rangers fourth straight win pushed them one point ahead of Philadelphia and into second place in the Metropolitan Division with nine games left. Philadelphia, which has two games in hand on the Rangers, will meet them in New York on Wednesday. Kyle Chipchura had a rare goal and assist, and defenceman Oilver Ekman-Larsson and Jeff Halpern also scored for the Coyotes, who hold the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Chipchura, who entered with only two goals and 11 assists in 69 games, helped set up Halperns goal and then was credited with the go-ahead tally when Rangers forward Chris Kreider knocked the puck into his own net. Smith stopped 25 shots while making his 12th consecutive start, but was forced to leave with 7:34 left in regulation after he injured his right leg when Brassard was pushed into him by Coyotes defenceman Derek Morris. Greiss came on for his first action since Feb. 28 and stopped seven of nine shots. The Rangers needed two big rallies to keep their winning streak alive. After being ushered off the ice by a chorus of boos following a poor first, the Rangers got Madison Square Garden rocking in the second, but Phoenix went back in front before the second intermission. Richards cut the Coyotes lead in half at 6:10 when a drive by Carl Hagelin found its way through traffic, hit him, and bounded between Smiths pads for Richards 17th goal and first in 11 games. The Rangers tied it with 9:07 left off hard work by Brassard. Brassard bumped with Chipchura in the neutral zone to get the puck into the Phoenix end, and then netted his 17th. Brassards pass attempt in front bounced back to him in the right circle, and he sent a rising shot into the top right corner to make it 2-2. The Rangers were nowhere near the top of their game at the start, and they paid for it. Just 29 seconds after Rick Nash was sent off for tripping, Ekman-Larsson scored his 13th of the season with a stick-bending wrist shot from the right circle at 4:40. Smith, who stopped 10 shots in the first period, earned his third assist of the season. Lundqvist kept Phoenix at bay for a bit, but he was hung out to dry by his teammates when Halpern made it 2-0 on the Coyotes fifth shot. Chipchura made a backhanded pass from below the goal line in front to a wide-open Halpern for a quick shot past Lundqvist at 8:22 for his fifth goal. It appeared the Rangers would be no worse than tied going into the third, but Kreider deflected an attempted centring pass by Chipchura from the left-wing boards between Lundqvists legs to make it 3-2 with 1:09 left in the second. Lundqvist angrily swept the puck out of the net as Chipchura celebrated his third goal of the season and first in 57 games, dating to Oct. 29 vs. Los Angeles. NOTES: Rangers D John Moore missed his second consecutive game because of concussion symptoms. ... Coyotes LW Lauri Korpikoski sat out due to an upper-body injury. .. The Heat reached that mark Saturday night when they ruined the Philadelphia 76ers home opener.MILAN, Italy -- Roma maintained its perfect start to the season with a 5-0 win over Bologna to return to the top of Serie A on Sunday, while Juventus kept up the pressure on the capital side with a 1-0 victory in a heated derby at city rival Torino. Roma is two points clear of Juventus and Napoli, with Inter Milan a further two points behind after it was held to a 1-1 draw at Cagliari. Elsewhere, Sassuolo picked up a second point, coming from two goals down to draw 2-2 against high-flying Lazio, while striker German Denis tormented former club Udinese as his two goals gave Atalanta a controversial 2-0 win. Also, it was: Catania 2, Chievo Verona 0; and Hellas Verona 2, Livorno 1. "Our objective is still to get back into Europe and be up there with the other favourites like Napoli and Juventus in the final sprint," Roma coach Rudi Garcia said. "Well see when we play against them. They are only two points behind, which is nothing." Roma had won all five of its games this season -- for the first time in its history -- but was yet to score in the first half. It corrected that failing after eight minutes. Bologna goalkeeper Gianluca Curci parried Miralem Pjanics free kick but Alessandro Florenzi ran in to head into an empty goal. Gervinho doubled Romas advantage 10 minutes later, dribbling forward past Mikael Antonsson and driving low inside the near post. And Mehdi Benatia added a third in the 25th with a stunning volley following a corner. Gervinho, who had had a disappointing two seasons at Arsenal, fired in under the bar in the 62nd for his third goal in two games before substitute Adem Ljajic capped a fantastic night for Roma on his 22nd birthday. "He is a lad who needs confidence and goalscoring opportunities, which dont exist without him there," Garcia added. "Of course he makes some mistakes, but if he plays and has a lot of chances, he scores." In Turin, Paul Pogba scored a contentious 54th-minute winner for Juventus, nodding in the rebound after Carlos Tevezs header came off the crossbar. There were fierce protests from Torino, however, as Tevez appeared to be offside. Torino had gone close in a scrappy first half, but Juventus dominated after scoring and never looked like conceding. Torino has not won the Derby della Mole since 1995, and hasnt even scored in the past 15 editions. Tevez injured his ankle in a nasty tackle by former Juventus striker Ciro Immobile, and his club says he is an injury doubt for Wednesdays Champions League match against Galatasaray. "They told me Tevez was offside. But it also has to be said that earlier we were unlucky because Immobile shoulld have been sent off for the foul on Tevez," Juventus coach Antonio Conte said.dddddddddddd. "Sometimes decisions are in your favour, sometimes not. "Today there was one team that looked for the victory and then there was Torino, which sat back and waited, even after going a goal down. Its a difficult league and our opponents change their whole approach to limit us rather than play their own football." Cagliari was still playing its home matches nearly 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) away in Trieste due to ongoing stadium troubles in Sardinia. Inter had several chances to take the lead but Cagliari was rescued by the heroics of goalkeeper Michael Agazzi, who pulled off impressive saves to deny Yuto Nagatomo, Fredy Guarin (twice) and Ishak Belfodil. Belfodil had the best of those chances but headed straight at the goalkeeper from very close range and Agazzi was able to stop it with the help of his left upright. Inter finally broke the deadlock in the 75th minute when Mauro Icardi headed in Nagatomos pass following a well-worked move. However, Cagliari levelled five minutes from full time as a deflection off Rolando took Radja Nainggolans shot past a hapless Samir Handanovic. Sassuolo had the worst attack and worst defence heading into the match against Lazio, with two goals scored and 16 conceded, but its first ever Serie A point -- in a 1-1 draw at Napoli midweek -- had given it confidence and the home side dominated the first half. Lazio took the lead against the run of play five minutes after the interval when Andre Dias headed Antonio Candrevas corner into the bottom left corner. The capital side doubled its advantage four minutes later with a low, 25-yard (meter) shot from Candreva, but Ezequiel Schelotto immediately pulled one back for Sassuolo when he headed in Jasmin Kurtics corner. Sassuolo levelled in the 76th when Antonio Floro Flores lifted a free kick over the wall. Lazio goalkeeper Federico Marchetti got his hands to the ball but couldnt prevent it from going in. In Bergamo, Atalanta took the lead moments from halftime when a corner was nodded on for Denis to head in from close range. Udinese thought it had been given the chance to level less than a minute into the second half when the referee signalled for a penalty after Guglielmo Stendardo pulled down Danilo. Antonio Di Natale stepped up to the spot before the referee consulted with his assistant and cancelled the penalty, because of an offside just before the foul. Denis doubled Atalantas advantage in the 63rd, running onto a chipped ball over the defence from Luca Cigarini and slotting into the bottom right corner. ' ' '
